Overview

Wiltshire’s Standing Advisory Council on Religious Education (SACRE) is an advisory body that supports the local community and enhances the quality of religious education in Wiltshire schools. New members are very welcome.

Purpose

A SACRE’s role is to advise the Local Authority on what must be done to improve religious education in its area. This involves influencing what pupils learn in RE, as RE is not part of the national curriculum but a local responsibility.

Key Responsibilities

• The locally agreed syllabus, produced by SACRE, which sets out what should be taught to pupils at all key stages and the standards expected. The syllabus is reviewed every five years.
• Choice of teaching materials and aspects of teacher training in RE.
• Monitoring schools’ provision for RE and collective worship.
